Eye Movement Desensitising and Reprocessing (EMDR)
As a trained psychotherapist prior to qualifying in EMDR, I have found that the two approaches complement each other exceptionally well. EMDR does not replace talking therapy it enhances it. Some people assume EMDR means there is little opportunity to talk, but in reality, the integration of both approaches often leads to highly positive and lasting outcomes.
I use Audio, eye movement or tapping.
EMDR is not only used for Trauma. In EMDR therapy you’ll recall a traumatic or negative memory. You usually do this while moving your eyes, like following your therapist’s finger moving side to side. But some therapists play sounds or use a light instead. This process is called bilateral stimulation.
You might have to go over the memory multiple times. And you can repeat the method again for different memories. By doing this we are 'Desensitising' the memory, and therefore any day to day negative impact on your life be it anxiety, flash backs, negative thoughts etc disappear. The good thing is that they do not return!
Researchers aren’t sure exactly why or how EMDR works. It’s thought that it helps your mind process the memory in a different way by gently detaching you emotionally from the memory, therefor the memory is much less harmless to you.
There are big T's and little t's, these mean it is possible to work with Anxiety, Depression, worry and many other issues you may face, not just big traumas.
Again you are in control of this type of therapy.
